11/5/20 Country Auto-Tune

A lot of music fans hate Auto-Tune, and in country music, it’s often associated with the bro-country era, which a lot of people also hate. That said, I have playlists for most everything else, so I’ll give this a go, too:

There are several different ways to make “robot voice” sounds. Yesterday, I covered the vocoder, and the day before, I covered the talk box and talking steel guitar.

Auto-Tune hit the market in late 1997, and the first big pop hit using it was in late 1998. What about country music, though ?

Faith Hill’s “The Way You Love Me” in November of 1999 is the earliest country hit (okay, pop country crossover, whatever you want to call it) I’m aware of that used Auto-Tune.

In 2001, George Strait (yes, George Strait) released the song “Stars On The Water,” so here’s a song with Auto-Tune that still sounded country, rather than a pop crossover effort.

Auto-Tune generally doesn’t appear in liner notes, so it can be hard to track down. Usually, it is used for minor pitch correction or other minor effects that might not be obvious. A lot of artists have used it, like Reba McEntire, Shania Twain, Tim McGraw, Rascal Flatts, and many more. The “bro-country” guys in the early 2010s took a page from hip-hop with very pronounced use of Auto-Tune. I realize this material rubs a lot of country fans the wrong way, but hopefully, you’ll get a laugh or two out of it.

Last month, king of Auto-Tune T-Pain said in a short video that he was a ghostwriter of Nashville country hits:

I considered making an entire post about this, but he didn’t mention specific songs. I haven’t seen any other country sites pick this up. If the Nashville country establishment had hip hop artists to “ghostwrite” country songs, then I’d like to know more of the details.

  1. Well I’m so new this I guess. Looking up all the tune crazy. I saw a video Tim McGraw singing in the college he was horrible can’t find it anymore. I open my singing I never use it does seem like cheating. How can you call that country?

    1. My goal in putting together such a list is to acknowledge that this material exists, and as you mention, even some huge stars like Tim McGraw used it. That’s not to say that it’s necessarily a good thing. Thanks for writing.

  2. It drives me crazy cuz when I go to do a cover song these fakes are using Auto-Tune. You ain’t country and you use auto-tune don’t sing country. It’s like Waylon Jennings said Dwight yoakam started the tight jean hillbilly pop wannabe hey I didn’t say it he did but I sure do agree with. It’s kind of like being a white rapper it don’t make no sense. Thank the Lord for real country. Real ones care about the music and the music being real from the heart. You got to have heart hell I love being a redneck.
