Yet another circle jerk of a “scene” with its own set of meaningless awards…
Here are the winners:
John Prine won Artist of the Year, and also recently won the BMI Troubadour Award. It’s legitimately a great year for him, following the best selling album of his career.
Tyler Childers won emerging artist. He had the most momentum of the candidates, so this was an easy prediction. He has done shows with Prine.
Molly Tuttle won instrumentalist, and will open a show for Jason Isbell at the Ryman.
Isbell got everything else: song, group, and album.
There were also assorted lifetime/special achievement awards.
EDIT/addendum: Tyler Childers’ acceptance speech is hilarious (saw it posted on FB this morning) , and is clearly a country singer’s point of view.
Also, take a look at the current top 25 Billboard Americana albums chart, and notice how hardly any of the people on that chart got to perform or present at this year’s Americanafest.
